A stunning, authentic 19th-century solid silver pocket novelty box, traditionally crafted in the Netherlands to hold peppermints or scent-infused sponges.
Design & Craftsmanship:
This pocket container features a classic octagonal/hexagonal vertical body decorated with an incredibly crisp, hand-chased geometric star and honeycomb panel design. The front face features an unengraved, vacant shield-shaped cartouche, ready for personalization. The high-relief domed lid showcases exquisite repoussé floral work, a textured central fruit motif, and a delicate beaded border.
Hallmarks & Authentication:
The box is fully and legally hallmarked on both the internal rim and the underside of the base to guarantee authenticity:
  1. Dutch Second-Grade Purity Mark: The rampant lion mark with a "2" certifying solid .833 purity silver.
  2. Rotterdam Assay Office Code: A clear square punch featuring a capital letter "D"on top, confirming it was processed through the historic Rotterdam office.
  3. Minerva Head Guarantee Stamp: Stamped cleanly into the exterior floral border.
Condition Report:
This piece is in good antique condition given its 140+ year age. It exhibits minor, honest pocket wear and some imperfections on the domed lid, which give it wonderful historic character. Most importantly, the hinge is entirely intact, and the lid closes nice, but not perfect. The interior cavity is perfectly clean and free of heavy corrosion. No evidence of modern repairs or alterations.
Dimensions & Weight:
  • Dimensions - 33mm x 26mm x 36mm ht
  • Weight - 13.7grams
This is a phenomenal, fully marked investment piece for collectors of fine Dutch silverware, vinaigrettes, or Victorian-era pocket novelties.
